Peter Nowak visits Google’s Waterloo office to present his book “Sex, Bombs & Burgers”. This event took place on March 11, 2010, as part of the Authors@Google series.

The talk will focus on the main theme of the book, which is how the military, and food industries have been the biggest drivers of technology over the past century. The links between these three are not immediately clear, but they are all rooted in humanity’s basest instincts. In essence, my book is about how the worst parts of human vice have resulted in some truly incredible achievements.

Peter Nowak is the senior science and technology reporter for CBC News Online. He has been writing about technology for more than a decade and his work has appeared in many top newspapers in Canada and around the world, including The National Post, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The Boston Globe, The South China Morning Post, The Sydney Morning Herald and The New Zealand Herald. He won the 2009 Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance award for excellence in reporting, and was named the 2006 journalist of the year by the Telecommunications Users Association of New Zealand. Peter Nowak lives in Toronto.

Contents of an MRE

This was lunch on the summit of Shelving Rock Mtn. Contents: vegetable crackers (2), assy packet w/spoon, creamer, fig bar, grape jelly, instant coffee, squincher (electrolyte replacement mix), pears, jambalaya w/ham & shrimp. 880 total calories. MRE heater (field ration heater or FRH) worked well. You take the main course out of the box and shove it into the FRH bag, then add water up to the lines marked on the bag. Fold the bag over on the top to prevent water from spilling out, then cram it into the main course box. Hold horizontal for 1 min (w/heater pad under the meal) to allow the water to mix with the chemicals inside the heater pad, then set aside diagonally against a rock for ten min. Gets meal pretty hot. This by the way is an MRE made by SOPAKCO (a longtime DOD supplier) for civilian/retail sale. They are available for purchase online or in army/navy stores. If you buy them by the case (12 meals), they come in a green and white box. Cases of MRE’s intended for military issue are marked “U.S. GOV’T PROPERTY. SALE IS UNLAWFUL”. Don’t buy stolen rations. Stay with the legal MRE’s. You help keep the MRE producers in business.
I was in the Army in the late 80’s. The MRE’s back then were in dark brown plastic pouches. The meals are better now. I miss the dehydrated beef patty though. I used to bite off a chunk, then take a swig of water from my canteen while roadmarching. We always ate the MRE’s cold.
