Madvillainy, my conclusions after a 3rd listen?

February 15th, 2010 | by admin |

This is mainly for the people who saw my other question.

I’ve now listened to this album three times and I think I am able to draw some conclusions. First, about MF Doom. I’ve listened to some of his other tracks and I think I know what my beef with him is: he doesn’t seem to adapt to other people’s tracks (at least from what I’ve listened of his collaborations with Madlib and Danger Mouse). When he produces his own beat, he does seem to have a better flow and to switch his style a little bit. He doesn’t just deliver monotonously, he intonates a little bit.

I also realized that I seemed to knock Madlib as a producer, which is not the case at all. I LOVED Champion Sound with Jay Dilla and Shades Of Blue is simply amazing. I guess my problem with the production on Madvillainy was that the structure of the album relied too much on something I called "sound effects", by which I meant the heavy use of voice samples and other random noises as transitions. After this third listen, I see a good quality in the beats, but Doom’s voice, flow and delivery just don’t seem to mix well with the production overall.

Anyway, this is my conclusion. I don’t say I hate the album anymore, but it’s not going near my top 25 either.

Nice to see you gave it another shot after listening to previous suggestions.

NOW LISTEN TO OPERATION DOOMSDAY!!!!

well, an opinion is an opinion. i cant argue with that.

its a VERY eccentric album. i like eccentric albums/groups/artists because they give me a feeling of pretentiousness and narcisstic egotism.

but really, i think the whole controversy behind the album adds to its depth and greatness.

it still ranks at #3 on my GOAT list. MF Doom used to be in my top 10 favorite, but hes fallen off since then.

but Madlib has always been top 5 for me.
